STAR’s Changing Strides Life Skills program provides the tools for at-risk youth to better manage their lives and foster positive relationships. Through partnership with a horse, students learn problem solving, communication, social skills, anger management, positive values, self worth, leadership skills and academic achievement. They also develop a commitment to community, reduce peer dependence and expand life skills.

The Changing Strides curriculum consists of:

• life skills lessons
• stable management
• equine activities
• horse care and handling
• basic riding skills

Throughout the session, students engage in making appropriate decisions through cause and effect, which the horses demonstrate in a very concrete manner. Our certified STAR instructors work to provide students with a stimulating, educational and safe experience by incorporating one of the values from our “Strides” to Success statement each week.

Safety
Trust
Respect
Integrity
Dedication
Excellence
Sensitivity

The program also addresses Citizenship and Public Speaking. STAR provides small group sessions, clear boundaries and expectations, multi-sensory stimulation and immediate direct feedback given by the horse. Through the Changing Strides program, we are providing students with redirection, guidance, acceptance and kindness. In return, we ask for a commitment to learning and honest reflection.

This program is in partnership with school systems, alternative schools, rehabilitation centers and juvenile justice centers.
